Broughton Poetry Day is an annual

This year we invite you to step into a
Secret Garden where you will reminisce along twisting pathways and share
enchanted tales. Have a go at creating a poetry garden, dig up some hidden
memories on our treasure map, make your own time capsule to bury in your garden
and contribute to the next few verses of the ever growing Big Broughton Poem.
Drop in to share stories, get creative, and
find your inner poet!

World Book Night, 23rd April 2012
This April, our members marked World Book Night by reading some of their poems at an event organised by the University of Salford. Joan, Cath, Shabana and Lola all shared some moving poems about loss, love and friendship with an audience of students and academics. Our members also submitted some short stories to the University’s first flash fiction competition which was launched as part of World Book Night.

International Women’s Day 2012
Every year, our partner Women Working Together play a central role in East Salford’s celebrations for International Women’s Day. In 2012, the celebrations took place at Broughton Hub and local residents were treated to an afternoon of creative activities. Writing Lives were asked to offer some creative writing activities and to share some of our own writing. Lucy encouraged people to tell the story of their hand and our Thursday group shared their hand stories.
Launch of The Big Broughton Poem publication at Salford Sampler Event, December 2011
Our Big Broughton Poem publication was officially launched at the University of Salford’s second Salford Sampler event at the Humphrey Booth Learning Centre. The Salford Sampler is a community storytelling workshop, which invites people from across the city to come along and share tales about anything to do with Salford. Our members launched the poem by reading it aloud along with a selection of their other work.
Manchester Beacon Recognition Award, Autumn 2011
In the Autumn of 2011,
the Writing Lives programme won a recognition award from the Manchester
Beacon in honour of the progress we have made in engaging Salford people in
creative activity. The Manchester Beacon profiles people, events, projects, resources and ideas for
public and community engagement. Harriet and Marie attended the ceremony in
Manchester and received a £750 development award and a certificate. The
development award will be used to facilitate a vital evaluation of the project
which will empower us to seek further funding and support.
In the summer of 2011 the Writing Lives programme hosted the first Broughton Poetry Day – an opportunity to share memories and experiences of life in Broughton through storytelling and poetry. Held in Broughton Library, the day included a variety of literary arts based activities: Poetry origami, poetry take-away, write-your-own Broughton postcard, etc. The event culminated in everyone coming together to write the Big Broughton Poem – a collective celebration of the unique experience of living in Broughton.
